Breaking new Ground : MG TRQ-L Initial Impressions | Specs

Being the new guy is never easy. The old guard either steps aside or shoves back — and that’s the challenge MG takes on with its first pickup, the TRQ-L.

When we say “new,” we mean new to our market. The model itself is based on the Maxus T70, which has been around for some time in other regions. Still, this is what we’re getting — the real question is how it drives, and how it stacks up against the competition.

Pickup Basics Covered

First up, the MG TRQ-L looks the part. The headlights may remind you of the Foton Thunder or Toyota Hilux, but the bold grille, muscular arches, and confident stance give it its own identity. The MG Red paint suits it well.

You get standard alloy wheels paired with surprisingly capable all-terrain tires for a 4×2 variant — a good move from MG Philippines, which will be offering both automatic and manual versions.

The bed comes with a liner, but not much else; owners might get a workout from loading and unloading. Suspension-wise, it runs on double wishbones up front and leaf springs at the rear. Ground clearance is a solid 215 mm, though MG hasn’t specified approach and departure angles — we don’t expect that to be a dealbreaker.

Driving Impressions

At the heart of MG’s first pickup is a 2.0L turbo diesel engine mated to an 8-speed automatic. In practice, there’s noticeable turbo lag — you’ll need to anticipate when the power kicks in, which can make quick climbs or overtakes a little tricky. It’s also on the noisy side during hard acceleration, which makes it feel a bit old-school.

But once you keep your foot down, it delivers a decent amount of pull — more than enough to move this 1,945 kg truck confidently. The shifts are smooth, steering weight feels balanced, and while handling is typical pickup fare, the Giti all-terrain tires noticeably improve grip and comfort. On a slippery, muddy back road, the TRQ-L felt right at home.

MG Philippines doesn’t plan on importing the 4×4 version, and that makes sense — the brand’s goal here isn’t to chase off-roaders, but to offer a reliable workhorse for everyday use.

Payload capacity is competitive at 1,055 kg. Inside, you get a 10.25-inch touchscreen running MG’s updated infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. No LED headlights here — just halogens — but they get the job done. Smart Entry is standard, and a reverse camera with guidelines adds convenience.

How much Will it Cost?

Here’s where it all MUST come together if MG want’s the TRQ to be a success. As of this writing, pricing hasn’t been revealed yet — we’ll know in a few days. But if MG manages to position it below ₱1.4 million, or better yet, under ₱1.3 million, then they might just have a real contender on their hands.
