Why I won’t be buying a GAC Empow (for now)

Look, I’m not rich. It’s unlikely I would ever buy a Ferrari (although I did get to drive one).

There’s a really good episode on Top Gear when James May finally gets to drive his dream car, which was the Lamborghini Countach. He perfectly said that it is the sort of car that belongs on your wall and that you should never meet your heroes and just stick with your memories because they are simply better.

He also talks about how he suddenly realizes the annoying stuff about his dream car, like how silly you look when you try to reverse into a parking space.

It’s the same feeling I have about this car.

Not because of its shortcomings, like how small the rearview mirror is, and why I don’t understand why you can’t simply use the paddle shifters when you’re on auto to downshift.

Truthfully, the GAC Empow is an absolutely EPIC car. I have found very little wrong with it.

People talk about how cheap it is or how you get a ton of value for the price you’re paying.

But I don’t want to dive into that because even if it’s priced higher, I would still buy it (and I will someday), but not right now.

The GAC Empow gives me all the emotions from giddiness like a schoolgirl to disbelief at this car’s driving dynamics.

It sounds awesome, the engine has a ton of power, and it turns like you want it to. The ride is amazing for this kind of car. It’s everything that I want it to be.

But for some reason, it feels like today is not the right time to buy one.

Maybe because I’m so early in my car review “hobby-ish career” that I know there will be better cars out there, I don’t want the GAC Empow to be downgraded in my thoughts. I don’t want to compare it because for me, it’s more than just metal; it’s a goal, a hunt, a challenge. It’s the sort of car I went out and shot over 150+ videos just to get to a point where I would be worthy of a lend out from GAC Philippines.

I did that, it’s here, and while I’m proud I did it, I simply do not want to stop just yet.

I want to keep dreaming, I want to look at it from a distance and say, “Ooh, I want that.” I want to work harder to the point where, when the time is right, I’d buy it like it was just ice cream.

When that day comes, it’ll be a good day. Just like today, when it was just me and “her” with an open road, no worries, and savoring each moment with this absolute monster of a car. See you soon, Mrs. Empow.
